A Large Narino Seated Dignitary (Coquero)
c. 1000 - 1400 AD

The very large ceramic figure seated majestically on a bench, hands on knees, the body smoothly modeled with bony shoulders and thin arms and legs suggesting an elder, the face abstract with minimal details, mouth slightly open and a coca wad in proper left cheek, dome-shaped cap on head. Covered with a burnished reddish brown slip with ample mineral deposits. The whole on an integral ceramic platform. This is an aesthetically sophisticated, finely sculpted example of a type that more often is cartoonish and folksy. In good condition, missing back of loincloth, repairs and visible restorations on arms, restoration to back left corner of platform.
