Description
Mary Corse (b. 1945)Untitled (White Knight), 1986
Glass microspheres in acrylic on canvas
81 x 81 inches (205.7 x 205.7 cm)
PROVENANCE:
Adams-Middleton Gallery, Dallas, Texas (label verso);
Private collection.
The combination of a minimalist aesthetic with an attention to subjectivity is central to the work of Mary Corse. The result is reminiscent of the Light and Space movement, popularized by James Turrell and Robert Irwin. Untitled (White Knight) exemplifies Corse's technique: her use of glass microspheres transforms a minimalist canvas into a surface on which blocks of light appear and disappear as the lighting changes and the viewer shifts perspective. This incorporation of chance and instability places the spectator's perception at the center of the aesthetic experience. And yet, the artist's gestures are also evident on the canvas. In this way, Untitled (White Knight) articulates unity and multiplicity among the elements of space, light, the viewer, and the artist's desire "to put the actual light in the painting."
