PROPERTY OF A JAPANESE COLLECTOR

This lot is a copy of the work, The Honorable Lucy Byng, by John Hoppner that is currently in The Frick Collection, New York.

Lucy Elizabeth Byng (1760-1844) whose father was George Byng, 4th Viscount Torrington, married Orlando Bridgeman, 1st Earl of Bradford in 1788. Her great-uncle was Admiral John Byng (1704-1757) who was court-martialed for what was considered his failure to prevent Minorca, a strategic position in the Mediterranean, from falling to the French during the Seven Years' War. Many saw him as a scapegoat for Naval inadequacies, however, he was sentenced to death and he was shot by firing squad when the King denied him clemency; the only admiral ever to be executed. The family felt the injustice quite keenly and even as late as 2007 some of Byng's descendants petitioned the British government for a posthumous pardon but it was refused by the Ministry of Defence.
