PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Dallas, Texas, by 1999;
Thence by descent to the present owner.

John Emms was born to be a sporting painter, possessing a singular gift for capturing the personalities and emotions of the animal kingdom.

He originally trained in the technical, highly finished manner of the Royal Academy, earning a place as an assistant to Frederic, Lord Leighton (see lot 69080). During this apprenticeship, he accompanied Leighton to Lyndhurst in Hampshire, a fateful trip to a region that captured Emms' heart so much so that he settled there permanently in 1881. Inspired by the area's natural beauty and the sport that he was able to engage in, Emms, a skilled horse- and huntsman himself, quickly shifted focus to portraits of horse and hound.

He abandoned the polish of the Academy in favor of a more painterly, expressive style that allowed him to quickly render his new, often wiggly, subjects. He showed a preference for kennel settings in his dog paintings, creating a sort of stage allowing him to highlight the social relationships within the pack. The eight terriers in this large-scale work are a family, each one with an individual personality, and there is clearly a conversation going on between them.

Their bright, sharp eyes and pricked ears reveal alertness and intelligence, and with his warm color palette and confident brushwork, Emms captures each dog's unique coloring, cleverly adding yellow to his white pigments so that none of the dogs, working animals all, are completely clean. The work surprises with its intimacy and exposes Emms' singular attention to detail; he was said to have taken dogs individually to his studio, studying their form and demeanor at their most relaxed.

Condition Report*: Lined canvas. Narrow areas of lining canvas visible at extreme edges of the work. Slight yellowing to the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure throughout, with a few scattered instances of pigment separation, most of which appear to be stabilized beneath the varnish layer. A very few scattered small dots of errant paint, possibly inherent to production. A small surface scuff next to a short vertical line of visible retouching in the lower left corner, affecting the first 'M' of the signature. A few faint vertical lines of transparent, matte white accretion along the lower edge in the lower right quadrant. Some scattered small dots of shiny accretion in the upper left corner, visible only under raking light. Not examined out of frame due to size.
Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly. Some small areas of brushy retouching to the background in the upper half of the work, particularly in the upper left quadrant. Aforementioned retouching, part of which affects the signature, fluoresces. More finely-applied retouching in the lower half of the background, particularly to the edges of the belly, chest, and back legs of the fourth dog from the right (standing). This same dog with a very few instances of finely applied retouching to address craquelure on the body. Some retouching to the ground under the rump of the rightmost dog (seated), and to the head of wheat next to his back left paw. Each dog with varying, but overall minor, degrees of strengthening applied to the darkest shadows of their eyes and noses.
Framed Dimensions 44 X 67.5 X 2.25 Inches
