PROVENANCE:
Private collection, San Diego, California.

We thank Jean-Pierre Manguin for confirming the authenticity of this painting, which was certified by the artist's daughter, Lucile Manguin, on May 16, 1969.

A prominent member of the Fauve circle, Henri Charles Manguin was renowned for his radiant use of color and vibrant sunlit Mediterranean landscapes, intimate interiors, or, as with the present work, still lifes. A friend and contemporary of Henri Matisse and Charles Camoin, he trained under Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he absorbed the expressive potential of color that would be the hallmark of his paintings. In the present work, a richly hued bouquet fills a deep violet vase, while a platter of pears, figs, gooseberries and other fruit, rests on a white ceramic platter touched with light blue. Manguin exhibited works with this same refinement of compositional structure and expressive brushwork at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne, which established him as one of the boldest voices of early modern French painting.
