Born in New York City, Don Troiani is considered one of the great historical military painters of our time. Having studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and New York City's Art Students League between 1967 and 1971, his attention to historical detail is nothing less than precise. In 1995, Troiani designed three Civil War battlefield commemorative coins for the United States Mint. His work has also appeared on a U.S. postal card commemorating the anniversary of the U.S. National Guard. Troiani noted that "if a historical painting is not accurate, then it's worthless both as art and as a historical document."
Margaret Corbin at Fort Washington represents a fascinating story in the Revolutionary War. Margaret stood by her husband, John Corbin, during his time on the battlefield. Upon his death, she immediately took his place at the canon and she was the first woman in U.S. history to receive a pension from Congress for military service. The British ultimately won the Battle of Fort Washington, resulting in the surrender of Margaret and her comrades and the taking of the last American position in New York City.
