PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Long Beach, California.

Born in Washburn, Missouri, in 1882, Edgar Alwin Payne later settled in Laguna Beach as the president of the Laguna Beach Art Association where he would become known as one of the most notable California landscape artists of the 20th century. Famous for his plein-air Impressionistic landscapes, he was referred to as "The God of the Mountains" in a 1927 review of one of his shows (As quoted by William H. Gerdts in Masters of Light: Plein-Air Painting in California, 2002). Spring in the Mountains exemplifies Payne's mastery of the mountain scene, capturing the grandeur of the California landscape. Using a pastel wash of color and panoramic format underscoring the abundance of new foliage, he expresses his spiritual and often romanticized relationship with nature.
