Regarding the present painting, Annette Bourrut Lacouture notes: "The [everyday] subject, manner, and palette of Contentment are close to the painter's works during the period of 1848-1855, [corresponding with] the Realist Movement. The [seated] man is wearing the work blouse of Courrières--la roulière. (The mention on the reverse of J. Boyard/Toiles et couleurs/Rue de Buci, 15./Paris is interesting since it is the same part of the city where the young painter had his first studio, 53, rue Notre-Dame des Champs.)"
We would like to thank Madame Bourrut Lacouture for providing catalogue information and for confirming the authenticity of this lot. This work will be included in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
