Description

Maynard Dixon (American, 1875-1946)
Bronco Buster, 1920
Pastel on paper laid on board
25-1/2 x 21 inches (64.8 x 53.3 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: Maynard Dixon 1920

PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Carmel, California.

NOTE:
There is an illustrative sketch on the reverse.

"As 1920 started, Maynard Dixon continued to produce striking illustrations for various periodicals. Among them was an untitled, double-sided work. In his illustration designs, Dixon often used the back of one finished image to create another. On one side was an energetic portrayal of an Oregon or Great Basin cowboy attired in signature wooly chaps so common to that region, attempting to prove he could stay on a rearing bronco. This particular image originated with his 1913 visit to the Pendleton Round Up in Pendleton, Oregon. Dixon never returned to the round up but the picture of the conflict between man and horse resonated for years afterwards, becoming an icon of a sort. Even in 1945, a year before his death, Dixon created two lithographs using the image although changing the attire a bit and the postures of the horse and rider. The reverse is an image of three men holding another at gunpoint. In a nod to the evolution of firearms, one man appears to holding a Colt automatic, not the traditional six gun. Dixon did not title the images but given the finished quality of both, it is likely they were submitted to a potential publisher."

We are grateful to Donald J. Hagerty for his expertise and gracious assistance in cataloging this painting.
