Richard Marquis earned his B.A. and M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied glass and ceramics with Peter Voulkos and Ron Nagle. His work is playful and witty combining ancient millefiori and murrini glass techniques with aesthetics inspired by the California funk art movement of the late 1960s.

Marquis has been the recipient of many awards including a Fulbright Fellowship to study murrine techniques at the Venini factory in Venice, Italy. He has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, Pilchuck Glass School in Washington, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. Since 1982, Marquis has maintained his studio on an island in the Puget Sound, Washington State. His work is included in numerous collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, California; the Corning Museum of Glass, New York; the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; among many others.
