Marvin Lipofsky earned his B.F.A in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois, and a M.S. and M.F.A. in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin, where he was later an instructor. Influenced by sculptors Peter Voulkos and John Mason, Lipofsky was later introduced to glass through his studies with Harvey Littleton. Lipofsky also taught glass as an art form in the Department of Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and later founded the glass department at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Best known for focusing on organic and amorphous forms, his semi-translucent glass sculptures are colorful and embrace an abstractionist style. Lipofsky's work is included in over 100 international museum collections including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, France; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and many others.
