Landscape served as an interim image for the BBC to display between acts of their live broadcast from Glyndebourne Opera of Sergei Prokofiev's "Love for Three Oranges," for which the artist had created sets and costume designs. Sendak gave the drawing to his gardener Peter Caponera, brother of his caregiver and housekeeper, Lynn Caponera.
