This illustration appeared in Edith Wharton's story, The False Dawn, in Ladies Home Journal, November 1923.

Caption: "Lewis instantly guessed that she too had seen the paper.
'Tweety you mustn't consider this of any consequence,' he stammered."


Edmund Ward made his professional debut before the age of 20 and worked steadily until his death. He worked in oils, and his paintings prior to 1930 had a dark tonality, were serious in subject matter, and painted in oil.
