A native of Lincolnshire and later resident of Rugby, Henry Frederick Lucas Lucas spent his long life of 95 years in horse country, painting stately equestrian portraits -- "Sir Roland," "Simonian," and "The Tetrarch," to name a few -- and sporting pictures with horses in action - in races, on foxhunts, and in polo matches. This unique collection of four hunting sketches exhibits Lucas Lucas's understanding of equine anatomy, as well as his preference for diagonal compositional elements, such as sloping paths or roadways, in order to emphasize motion. Together, the sketches illustrate before-and-after stages of a foxhunt, where the horses are steadfast and regal, and the hounds variously competent.
