The subject of this lovely landscape by Samuel Colman is Mount Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Before the Europeans arrived, this highest peak in the northeastern United States was known as Agiocochook, or "Home of the Great Spirit." Mount Washington's many different faces have been the subject of several famous paintings, among them works by Benjamin Champney, John F. Kensett, and Albert Bierstadt. Musical tributes have also been made to the commanding mountain, such as Symphony no. 64, Op. 422 ("Agiochook"), composed around 1990 by the American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000), who had climbed it during his youth.
