Description

"Ice Cream Cone" Aragonite
Guilin Prefecture, Guangxi Province, China
28.0 x 11.0 x 10.0 cm (11.0 x 4.3 x 3.9 in)

The texture of the "ice cream" portion of the specimen is difficult to describe, but beautiful: it shimmers like a layer of fresh snow, or like a very bright velvet cloth. The Aragonite on top of the specimen has actually grown as tiny, fibrous crystals that shimmer, lending to the velvet-like texture. The overall form of the top is also very beautiful, starting from a fine tip, then expanding and cascading down over the "cone" as if dispensed from a soft serve machine. The base of the specimen consists of an entirely different form of Aragonite, where the fibrous crystals have grown together like spiky white branches, but with the same shimmering luster of the top. Interestingly, one side of the stem appears to have a dusting of a darker accessory mineral, accentuating the fibrous form of the Aragonite.

This specimen was featured in the popular documentary series "What's Hot in Tucson," by Bluecap Productions, in their 2021 production. You can find this Aragonite specimen discussed at the timestamp 0:17:33.

Ex. Thomas Everitt collection (#TAE-379).
