MALAIA GARNET

Very Fine Gemstone: Malaia Garnet - 33.37 Ct.
Umba River Valley, Tanzania

Gem variety names can sometimes be quite revealing, in their commentary, about the local culture at the original source. When first found, the previously unknown combination of Pyrope and Spessartite confused the local rough buyers. Because this new material didn't fit into traditional classification schemes, the buyers, initially called this material "Malaia," meaning 'outcast,' and rejected it. This is also the term used for "soiled doves" or "ladies of the evening." The orange base color, coupled with some red and brown overtones, caused the buyers to get over their initial reluctance fairly quickly - now this unique variety of Garnet is highly desirable. Stones over 3 carats are very unusual and command significant prices. This eye clean, cushion shaped stone, cut in a modified brilliant style, is very large for this material at 33+ carats. The rough was found in 1965 and later was cut by master lapidary Alfred Huth in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. Its physical parameters are recorded in AGL Cert # CS 65947, which also states that it shows no evidence of treatment or enhancement.
Measurements: 20.97 x 16.32 x 9.74 mm, 33.37 cts.
Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Rainbow of Africa Collection
Accompanied by AGL Certificate # CS65947
