Very Fine Gemstone: Tourmaline var. Elbaite - 71.98 Ct.
Ilakaka Commune, Ranohira District, Horombe Region, Fianarantsoa Province, Madagascar


The term "Gold Rush" may be ancient history in some parts of the world, but it still has applicability in places like Madagascar, where a "Sapphire rush" starting in 1998 turned Ilakaka, a sleepy little town of 40+ people, into a wild west boom-town boasting almost 60,000 residents in 2005. People are still coming to the area, searching for their own personal "El Dorado." Along with the Sapphire that fueled this modest growth, there were also finds of other gem materials of note, Tourmaline being one of them. This cool blue-green confection surfaced as a piece of rough there in 2003 and was fashioned into a cushion shaped stone cut in a modified brilliant style. The polish and workmanship of the eye clean stone are excellent and the cert that comes with it (AGL # CS 65961) indicates that there is no evidence of any treatments, or clarity enhancements, having been used on this fine gemstone.
