Description
GERONIMOc. 1886
Geronimo and Other Chiricahua Apache Prisoners, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Sept. - Oct. 1886. Stereograph by F. Hardesty, San Antonio, Texas; but on a tan mount of the Llano, Texas, photographers Leach & Hanna. Identification "Geronimo" in the lower, right negative; with an ink inscription at bottom of mount: "while a prisoner at San Antonio, Texas."
The Apache prisoners, on their way to exile at Fort Marion, Florida, arrived in San Antonio in early-September and remained for six weeks. They were housed in a tent encampment in the secure, stone Quadrangle of the fort. Geronimo's lieutenant Naiche, called Natchez, is the man at right. An alternate view of this group, made within five minutes from the same camera position, is in the Fort Sam Houston Museum collection, on the mount of F. Hardesty.
Dimensions: image, 6 ¼ x 3 inches; mount, 7 x 3 ½ inches
