Description

A FOSSIL "ASPIRATION"
Mioplosus labracoides
Fossil Lake, Kemmerer, Wyoming
Green River Formation - Lower Eocene, 56 MYA

Over 50 million years ago, an overly optimistic fish bit off more than it could swallow, and paid for its indiscretion with its life. Unfortunately for the two Mioplosus involved in this confrontation, the Heimlich Maneuver was not part of the Fossil Lake fish skill set. The result was asphyxiation and death for both parties. Paleontologists call this rather rare occurrence: Aspiration. As rare as this process is in the fossil record, there are additional factors that ratchet up the rarity aspect a couple of levels. First, is that it involves a species that is much less common than the typically found species in the Fossil Lake fauna. Secondly, both of the fish involved belong to this uncommon species, Mioplosus labracoides. Skillfully prepared by a professional conservator, this pair of unlucky fish are displayed on the limestone plate on which they were found, by a lucky fossil digger. This story of the last meal has been mounted into a custom frame to showcase the event.
