Description
CALCITEPaldhi, Jalgaon District, Maharashtra, India
Even as there are winning lottery tickets amidst a lot of losers, there are also Calcite specimens of worth amidst a literal sea of also-rans: specimens only suitable for destructive testing by students with geology picks. The vast lava flows of the Deccan Traps of India are responsible for this sparkly treasure. It started out as a simple scalenohedral Calcite crystal without color, then it was over-coated with colorless, stubby Quartz crystals, upon which another Calcite of slightly different color (light tan) grew, only to have a coat of druzy Quartz grow on top of that. As a final touch, a number of brown Calcite crystals of pseudo-cubic habit sprouted from the upper surfaces, including the absolute tip, where the largest (1 inch +/2.7 cm) Calcite of this group resides. A colorless Apophyllite and a tiny stalactite bearing a tiny Brown Calcite share the top of the group with the big Calcite cube. In pristine condition.
Overall measurements: 5 x 2.75 x 2.75 inches (12.7 x 7 x 7 cm).
Provenance: David Crawford [Hoppel # D2091]
