Description
NAGYÁGITESacarîmb (Szekerembe; Nagyág), Deva, Hunedoara Co., Romania
Nagyágite is a veritable stew of Elements: Lead, Gold, Tellurium, Antimony, and a bit of Sulfur. It was the Gold and Lead that made Nagyágite an object of devout interest if not ... lust, on the part of miners and governments. It was first described in 1845, it has been mined far before the 1800's. Here flat plates and twinned, bladed crystals up to .81 inch (2 cm) long are placed: over, around, and within a gray, siliceous matrix with occasional blebs of druzy Quartz. The dead black, waxy to metallic luster of the Nagyágite is visually, very different, making differentiation of the Nagyágite from the matrix a simple chore. This well-crystallized assemblage of large plates is a rare survivor from the Gold smelters. Condition is pristine for this sophisticated collector specimen. The accompanying label is a 'cut-down' David New one and there is an accession number on the obverse "16347", which probably is associated with an owner before Mr. New.
Overall measurements: 3 x 2.5 x 1 inches (7.6 x 6.4 x 2.5 cm).
Provenance: Western Minerals, ex. David New Collection [Hoppel # D1719]
