LITERATURE:
The Literary Digest, New York, February 9, 1935, cover, illustrated.
Remington Schuyler's Citizenship, Boy Scouts of America is a bold visual allegory celebrating the civic ideals central to Scouting. A Boy Scout, energetically posed mid-action, chisels the word "Citizenship" into a monumental stone tablet bearing the BSA insignia. Behind him looms the heroic bust of an idealized young man, carved in classical style, symbolizing moral strength and national virtue.
The composition pairs dynamism with monumentality-contrasting the lively realism of the Scout's form with the sculptural stillness of the bust. The vibrant red neckerchief stands out against a cool blue sky, drawing the eye to the figure's focus and determination. Through this juxtaposition, Schuyler emphasizes that citizenship is not inherited, but built-through action, discipline, and service.
An accomplished illustrator and muralist, Schuyler trained at the Art Students League, New York, and in Paris. He contributed regularly to The Saturday Evening Post and Boys' Life, and was known for his patriotic, idealistic imagery. In Citizenship, BSA, the artist unites classical form with American optimism, offering a timeless vision of youth shaped by civic duty.
