LITERATURE:
Ordeal Ceremony Pamphlet, The Boy Scouts of America, 1968, cover.

Joseph Csatari's The Ordeal, created as the cover image for the Ordeal Ceremony Pamphlet of the Order of the Arrow, captures a solemn moment of honor, transition, and belonging within the Boy Scouts of America. Rendered in Csatari's signature realist style, the composition centers on a young Scout at the moment of his induction into the Order-a national honor society within Scouting dedicated to cheerful service and leadership.

The Scout stands at attention, his expression steady and introspective as a Native American elder figure drapes the ceremonial white sash with its red arrow across his chest. The inclusion of Native American regalia and symbolism reflects the Order's long-standing-though today increasingly scrutinized-tradition of drawing inspiration from Indigenous imagery and storytelling. Behind them, a buckskin scroll adorned with pictographs evokes the weight of ancient rites and enduring brotherhood.

Two fellow Scouts observe with reverence, one raising the Scout sign in silent solidarity. The deep blue of the night sky contrasts with the warm tones of firelight and hides, heightening the ceremony's sacred atmosphere. Csatari's careful attention to gesture, texture, and symbolism elevates this scene from mere illustration to visual ritual, emphasizing themes of growth, responsibility, and identity.

As Norman Rockwell's chosen successor as the official artist of the Boy Scouts, Csatari brought not only technical precision but a deep respect for the values and pageantry of Scouting. The Ordeal reflects his ability to dramatize internal transformation through outward ceremony, honoring the gravity of this symbolic passage into leadership and service.
