Description
VARISCITELittle Green Monster Mine, Clay Canyon, Fairfield, Oquirrh Mts, Utah Co., Utah, USA
Variscite is a green semi-precious gemstone that is a close cousin of Turquoise. The only difference between the two is that Variscite has no Copper as a component, which tends to result in Variscite being some shade of green against the typically blue color of Turquoise. Variscite forms under virtually the same conditions. Some of the best material found so far in the U.S. has come from an occurrence in Clay Canyon, Utah where nodules of brecciated phosphate minerals, chiefly Variscite, show interior patterns of medium lime green surrounded by rims of yellow, brown and pale lilac. This example is a portion of a nodule that has been sawn and polished to show the interior patterns. The locality is supposedly exhausted, and, in fact, all material seen on the market is the result of 'liberation' from old collections. It seems that this specimen came from such a collection: on the bottom is a painted accession number "595" for which we have no corresponding data. However, the piece also includes a historic label from the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia with accession No. 26717. The "end cut" is complete and in excellent or pristine condition with a fine polish.
