Description

"Mercedes" Calcite with Epitaxial Chalcopyrite
Chenzhou City, Chenzhou District, Hunan Province, China
16.0 x 9.0 x 2.8 cm (6.3 x 3.5 x 1.1 in)

"Mercedes" Calcite, named for the crystallization of associated Chalcopyrite along the axes of the Calcite's terminations, are one of the most famous and popular habits of the species. This epitaxial deposit of the iridescent sulfide results in a shape that resembles the logo of Mercedes Benz, making this a fun and highly collectible combination. This specimen from the Chenzhou district of China is unusually abundant, with the plate covered completely by tabular crystals, each one translucent and in excellent condition, and all of them featuring the desirable Chalcopyrite coating.

Ex. Thomas Everitt collection (#TAE-194).
