William Henry Jackson was a photographer and artist who worked for Hayden Survey, part of the United States Geological Survey (USGS). His photographs of the American West, created in situ using large glass plate negatives and a portable darkroom, helped establish Yellowstone National Park and the National Park Service. This very rare image depicts the team of horses that was so essential in transporting members of the Survey and their cumbersome scientific tools and equipment.
