Gloria Petyarre, one of four renowned Anmatyerre painting sisters, is internationally celebrated for her energetic abstractions in Bush Medicine and Awelye paintings. An expert colorist, Petyarre first came to prominence in the 1970s as an abatik painter, using hot wax and fabric to create intricate patterns before moving to canvas in the 1980s.
Gloria Petyarre's Awelye paintings feature bright colors and long, rhythmic lines. Awelye is a ceremonial tradition practiced by Anmatyerre and Alyawarr women of Australia, honoring ancestors and the land through intricate body paint designs. Using natural pigments such as ochre, red, and charcoal black, these designs represent dreams, animals, plants, and healing.
