Condition Report*:
Lined canvas. An approximately 2 by 4 inch patch to reverse of canvas. Faint stretcher bar marks visible at edges. Minor frame abrasion at extreme edges. A few small dots of white accretion, possibly paint, in center of lower half of the image. Very minor surface dust. In original frame by Fratelli Pacetti, Florence (label verso).
Under UV: heavily applied varnish fluoresces green. Scattered finely applied dots and dashes of retouching to background. Apparent older strengthening or retouching applied to the figure's hair and beard. Retouching, coordinating with location of aforementioned patch on the reverse, in the background to the left of the figure's face, at the level of the base of his hat.
