California painter Warren Rollins studied under Virgil Williams at the San Francisco School of Design, eventually becoming the Associate Director of the school. His work is based on personal travel throughout the western United States, extensively in New Mexico. Rollins's oeuvre is comprised largely of Native American scenes. The artist's premier exhibition was in Santa Fe in 1910. In 1917, his "Indian" scenes became quite popular, and subsequently the Santa Fe Railroad provided the artist with a studio to paint the Grand Canyon in El Tovar.

Campfire Chat portrays an intimate fireside conversation between two young Native American men. Rollins depicts details of the Indian environment--textured adobe walls, Navajo blanket, concho belts--with loose brushstrokes and adopts the warm color tones of the campfire to emphasize the calm dramatization of the encounter.
