Dallas's first native professional artist, Olin Travis trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and began teaching there in 1914. In 1926, he co-founded the Art Institute of Dallas with his wife, Kathryn Hail Travis. Some of the leading Texas artists of the 1930s and 1940s taught and studied at the Art Institute of Dallas at Travis's invitation, including Reveau Bassett, Charles T. Bowling, Jerry Bywaters, Alexandre Hogue, and William Lester. The Travis' also conducted a summer art school in the mountains near Cass, Arkansas from the 1920s through the mid-1930s. A studio fire ended the school abruptly in the mid-1930s, destroying many Travis paintings. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as in the Texas artists annual in Fort Worth, the annual Dallas Allied Arts, the Texas Centennial Exposition, and the Greater Texas and Pan-American Exposition. The Dallas Museum of Fine Arts (now the Dallas Museum of Art) also held at least three solo exhibitions for Travis.
