Part of the influential Dallas Nine Artists, Octavio Medellin was a Mexican-American sculptor whose art focused on the elemental and natural world. Medellin's family settled in San Antonio after the violent Mexican Revolution. The artist would attend the San Antonio Art Institute and later the Chicago Art Institute. Medellin returned to Mexico to explore his heritage and art in 1929.

Throughout his career, Medellin continued to influence future generations of artists teaching at the Witte Museum, Southern Methodist University, University of North Texas, The Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, and in 1966 opened the Medellin School of Sculpture in Dallas. Next year the Dallas Museum of Art is mounting the first major retrospective of his work since his death, which is expected to create increased collector interest in his work.
