PROVENANCE:
Galerie Michael, Beverly Hills, California;
Acquired by the present owner from the above, 2014.

By the late nineteenth century, the palette was emblematic of the artist's process. While some palette paintings were done to use up leftover pigment, others, like Paul Chaigneau's, were fully realized scenes-here a pastoral subject for which he is best known. In an era when painters frequently became celebrities, the palette painting served as a proclamation of the artist's reputation, displaying his favored subject and refined technique directly on the "tool of his trade." These palettes were often gifts to a friend, patron, or fellow artist; they rarely appear in dealer's ledgers or galleries of the period. Rather, they are "collector's items" that elevate an artist's renown, a work of art and a souvenir of its creation (see T. van Druten, "Making and Creating, The Painted Palette in Late Nineteenth-Century Dutch Painting," Studio Matters: Materials, Instruments and Artistic Processes, M. Wagner, ed., Amsterdam, 2013).
