Stone Mosaic Diptych - "Los Angeles Stratigraphy"
Artists: Susan Judy & Neffra Matthews

"Los Angeles Stratigraphy" is a collaborative stone and fabric diptych illustrating the tectonic and geologic history of the Los Angeles Basin. The composition portrays faulting, sedimentary layering, weathering profiles, and representative fossils, including California's state fossil, the Smilodon, interpreted through an intricate geological intarsia.

Created by Colorado-based artists Susan Judy and Neffra Matthews, both trained geologists, the work bridges scientific observation and fine art. Judy, a stone mosaic artist and former exploration geologist, executed the left panel in inlaid stone mosaic, while Matthews, a fiber artist specializing in 3D geologic imaging, mirrored the composition on the right panel using quilted and embroidered fabric. The juxtaposition of stone and textile-hard and soft media-creates a compelling dialogue between geology and artistic form.

The stone mosaic incorporates Marble, Sandstone, Limestone, Onyx, Amazonite, Quartzite, Aventurine, Slate, Granite, and Metasomatite. Fossil imagery is sandblasted into the stone and embroidered into the fabric, while the textile half features hand-dyed batik fabric with custom quilted geologic symbols.

This diptych, a masterful collaboration uniting geologic insight, craftsmanship, and artistic innovation, exemplifies the intersection of science and art through an inspired interpretation of Southern California's geological landscape.
Single Panel Measurement: 42.13 x 14.17 x 1.18 inches (107.00 x 36.00 x 3.00 cm)
