An Aztec Feathered Serpent (Quetzalcoatl)
Mexico, c. 1300-1500 AD

Carved from dense, fine-grained black basalt, the serpent is coiled with the head resting on its body, the open mouth showing fangs and a bifurcated tongue. The eyes are set beneath strongly raised brow ridges, and the plumes cascade in flowing bands like currents of wind or water, continuing to the segmented rattle, here fully articulated with seven sections. The underside is equally finished, with careful carving of the ventral scales and the rattle completed fully in the round. The naturalism of the rattlesnake is joined to the supernatural identity of Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, a creator deity associated with rulership, priests, knowledge, and the union of earthly and celestial forces.

The sculpture shows close observation of nature transformed into sacred form. The coiling body, flowing plumes, and fully worked underside give the piece unusual completeness and sculptural force. A remarkable rendering of one of the most important divine beings in Aztec art. In excellent condition with minor abrasions and small surface chips.
