A Diquis Gold Avian Pendant Costa Rica, c. 1000 - 1400 AD
Cast in tumbaga, a high-gold alloy with silver and copper, this pendant depicts an eagle in flight. The hammered gold wings, tail, and feathers on the head rendered with crisp outlines. The head, with a hooked beak and gold bead eyes, conveys a sense of alertness and power, characteristic of Diquís avian representations. Gold thread bands at neck, spirals at side of head and talons. A loop on back for suspension, indicating use as personal adornment or ritual insignia. Exceptional in its craftsmanship, this pendant exemplifies the Diquís mastery of goldsmithing techniques.
