Zao Wou-Ki (Chinese, 1921-2013)
Born February 13, 1920 in Beijing, China, Zao Wou-Ki is currently one of the premier artists of the world. In his early years Zao studied calligraphy and received training from the China Academy of Art. His blend of abstract and Asian concepts like the Indian Ink technique draws viewers to his work from all over the world.
Starting with his first exhibition in Paris, Zao received acclaim from famous artists such as Miró and Picasso. Through out his whole career Zao's art drew upon a lot of Asian and impressionist influence. Some of his biggest influences were Picasso, Matisse, and Cézanne which is easy to tell from his use of color and abstraction of his subject that is usually related to nature.
Zao's use of color and Asian techniques of painting create beautiful landscapes with lots to deliberate about. His art can sometimes seem confusing like most impressionists but relaxing during viewing will allow the simplicity and beauty hidden within the painting to shine through. His lighting techniques create serenity for the aficionado and casual art fans.
Up until his death, Zao was a member of Académie des beaux-arts and was considered one of the most prominent Asian artists of his lifetime. In 2011 he set his personal auction record of HK$68,980,000(US$8,863,930) at Sotheby's in Hong Kong, China. His style is non-inclusive, for those who find nature coupled with abstract concepts like that seen in the work of other impressionists then Zao Wou-Ki is definitely an artist to check out.
