Jonas Wood (American)

Birth Place: Boston, MA USA

Who is painter and photographer Jonas Wood?

Jonas Wood is a mixed media collage artist whose work often focuses on interiors, landscapes, and still-life. His work has also been compared to the pop art movement because of its vibrancy and playful, almost kitsch aesthetic. The Huffington Post described his work as “... steeped in tradition yet completely fresh.” His work has been exhibited the world over and he is represented by the famed Gagosian gallery.

Wood is the child of artists and is married to Shio Kusaka, a porcelain maker and artist. Together they have co-authored the book series under the pen name Wood Kusaka Studios. Wood is still early in his art career, yet the accolades have already begun to tumble in. He’s been compared to Matisse and David Hockney for his use of space and intimate settings.

What kind of art does Jonas Wood make?

Jonas Wood makes collage and mixed-media paintings that often focus on memory. Wood stated in an interview in Architectural Digest, “I'm interested in exploring the spaces that I’ve inhabited and the psychological impact they've had on me and my memories of them.” Wood frequently makes use of watercolors and the outlines of pots or vases to use as a framed landscape. He is perhaps best known for his inclusion in the group exhibition “Mixed Signals: Artists Consider Masculinity in Sports” which ran at the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2010.
