Nationality: American

Biography:
Following in the footsteps of George Catlin and Karl Bodmer, New York magazine illustrator William de la Montagne Cary documented the virgin territory of the Northern Plains Indians before the completion in the late 1860s of the transcontinental railroad. In 1861, Cary traveled on a hunting expedition along the Missouri River from New Mexico to Montana, experiencing along the way colorful exploits, including a boat fire and near capture by a Crow Indian tribe. He then returned westward to Washington in 1874 with a railroad survey team on assignment from Harper’s Weekly. Cary’s voluminous sketches from these two trips formed the basis of his art, both his oil paintings as well as his magazine illustrations.
