Biography:
Wendell Castle (1932-2018) was an American furniture maker who is widely considered the ‘Father of the American Art Furniture movement.’ With a long and rich career of making, exhibiting and teaching Castle has been widely influential and incredibly commercially successful. Creating first sculptural pieces out of plastic in the 1960’s and then later sculptural wood works using the stack-lamination technique, he is able to easily dictate the size and shape of his forms, without restriction. His pieces are objects of great power, and grace, and he has maintained an ability to continually inspire his peers and delight the wider Design world. Castle’s long career has garnered well-deserved and unparalleled fame and accolades. His work is included in major international institutions and collections, and he has been granted a large number of important awards. In 1994 he was awarded the ‘Visionaries of the American Craft Movement’ nod which is sponsored by the American Craft Museum. A gold medal followed from the American Craft Council in 1997. Grants have been given to the Castle studio from both the National Endowment of the Arts as well as the Comfort Tiffany Foundation. In 2001, he received the award of distinction from The Furniture Society of America.
