Wayne Thiebaud (American, b.b. 1920)

Also known as:  Thiebaud, Morton Wayne

Birth Place: Mesa (Maricopa county, Arizona, United States)

A pioneer of the pop culture art movement, Wayne Thiebaud is renowned for his works in pop art realism. Thiebaud's art is recognized in his use of bold colors and strong shadows to enhance the hyper realism of his works. In 1962, Thiebold received national recognition in the launch of Pop Art. Although he was credited for hyper-realism, he publicly proclaimed his work as illusionary.

Wayne Thiebaud was born November 15, 1920 and grew up in Southern California. He started creating his artwork in the mid-fifties, long before the birth of Pop Art. As a teenager, he is credited with his apprenticeship at Walt Disney Studios. Thiebaud began college at San Jose State University in 1949; however he later transferred and graduated with a Masters Degree from California State University in 1952.

Since his first showing and rise in popularity, Thiebaud paintings have sold as high as 1.7 million dollars. In 2007, Wayne Thiebaud was honored at the National Academy of Design. In his acceptance speech he stated, "I have no idea what art is, but to be a painter- is something in which you have to prove."

Today, Wayne Thiebaud resides in Sacramento, California. His home is a modest house with colorful flowers blooming in the backyard. Long-time area locals know him by name, and always receive his signature greeting, a friendly "howdy." He is rarely seen without a sketch book under arm and on particularly nice days, you will find him on the edge of the Sacramento River with his easel.
