Walker Evans (American, 1903-1975)

Photography

Birth Place: Saint Louis (St. Louis Indep. City, Missouri, United States)

Biography:
After Walker Evans returned from Paris in 1927, he was alienated from American society. Evans reaction was to turn to photography. In the 1930s, he worked for the FSA making many of his most memorable photographs. However, he had artistic differences of opinion with the organization and left. He went on to make his shoebox series of candid photographs of subway riders in New York and industrial landscapes and interiors. His entire archive was sold to the dealer Harry Lunn. Evans influenced many photographers such as Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, and the ‘street’ photographer of the 1970s and 1980s.
