Who is sculptor Vasa Mihich?

Vasa Mihich, also known simply as VASA, is a conceptual artist, painter, and sculptor whose work with theories of color has helped inform his art for over fifty years. Vasa is best known for his colorful sculptures, mostly made from plastic and acrylics. These minimalist works are often brightly colored and have been shown at some of the best galleries in the world.

He has exhibited at the Denver Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, and the San Diego Museum of Art. VASA is also known for this work that he did at UCLA, where he was a professor of Design and Media Arts. While there, he taught theories of color where he helped codify new ways to speak about color.

What kind of art does Vasa Mihich make?

Vasa Mihich primarily makes minimalist sculptures called Vasa cube sculptures. Vasa started his process, using long bands of colored plastic, sometime in the early 1960s. Later, his use of clear plastic in the late 1960s cemented his process. While his process has remained the same, the almost infinite use of color and combinations have allowed VASA to explore a vast array of different art styles. His Vasa cube sculptures have become quite popular in the last few decades.

How did sculptor Vasa Mihich get started?

Vasa Mihich was born in Yugoslavia in 1933. He spent his early years in various art academies in Belgrade, eventually becoming a faculty member at the University of Belgrade in 1956. Vasa immigrated to California from Yugoslavia in 1960. Almost immediately, he began teaching design at UCLA. His work centered on understanding the intersection of light and color, especially when used in the creation of three-dimensional objects. His fame really started in earnest in January 1966, when he was one of the featured artists for the exhibit, “American Sculptures of the Sixties” at the Los Angeles County Art Museum. A year later Vasa would build on this momentum by starting to include clear plastic in his work to help support his color planes.
