Tony Duquette
Also known as: Duquette, Tony
Biography:Born in Los Angeles, Tony Duquette started his artist life in the theatre. After graduating from Chouinard Art Institute and free-lancing for various designers, he quickly established himself as one of the leading designers in Los Angeles. He was the first American artist to have a one-man showing at the Louvre. This would be the first of many solo exhibitions. Through the 1960’s and 70’s, the Duquette’s (wife Elizabeth, whom he married in 1949, was an artist, his muse, and life collaborator), traveled the world creating private oasis interiors for notables such as Doris Duke, Norton Simon and a castle in Ireland for Elizabeth Arden. Additionally, he designed interiors for commercial and public spaces, including a monumental exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum of Science and Industry at Exposition Park. His love of opulence, whether it be in exotic fabrics, hides, feathers, objects d’art from South East Asia, recycled and found objects brightly spray-painted, to gems; bold, colorful and unabashedly combined were always his vision. He never stopped creating fantasy living spaces, art and jewelry. At the time of his death at age 85 in 1999, he was in the midst of working on the interiors in the Palazzo Brandolini in Venice and a jewelry collection for Gucci. His work is carried on by his longtime business and design partner, Hutton Wilkinson, recreating from Duquette’s original works.
