Tom Munsteiner
Biography:
Tom Munsteiner was destined to be a carver. Born in 1969 in Bernkastel-Kues, Germany, he’s the son of famed carver, Bernd Munsteiner, receiver of a long list of awards for his transformative gem cutting. Bernd created the fantasy cut and developed “negative cutting”, playing with light return through a gem in a whole new way. He also carved the world’s largest single piece of cut-gem aquamarine, the Dom Pedro at 10,363 carats, which resides in the Smithsonian. Tom has acquired many prestigious awards and notoriety in his own right. Having trained in world renowned Idar-Oberstein, he’s a master stone cutter and has created his own distinctive gemstone cutting method. The Munsteiner style of design embraces the crystal inclusions by using negative facets or cutting into the gem, to draw attention to the uniqueness of each stone, melding technique with artistry. Tom, together with his designer wife, Jutta, create for their Atelier Munsteiner in Stipshausen, that his father built in 1973. The master designers strive for the development of new and vivid cuts, whether it be in jewelry or sculpture.
