Thomas Hovenden (American, 1840-1895)

Birth Place: Dunmanway (County Cork, Munster, Ireland)

Born in Dunmanway, County Cork, Ireland, the genre painter Thomas Hovenden immigrated to New York in 1863 and attended the National Academy of Design. In 1874, he studied in Paris with the academic painter Alexandre Cabanel before settling in Philadelphia and assuming a teaching post at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His most famous painting, The Last Moments of John Brown, belongs to the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York. Other museums featuring Hovenden's paintings include the Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan; Philadelphia Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Fine Art; and Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven.
