As one of the most prominent artists of his day, Thomas Gainsborough built up a solid reputation during the 18th century. He was trained as an artist starting in 1740 in London, which enabled him to meet with many other prominent artists of his day. He quickly built up a reputation as a skilled portrait artist, which provided him with a high volume of work. Gainsborough since produced a number of popular paintings, which have left a lasting impact on the world of art.
Some of his most popular portrait paintings have included works such as "The Blue Boy" and "Mr. and Mrs. Robert Andrews." These works signify the skill of the artist, especially when it comes to fusing different types of color palettes together. In his day, the artist was well known for producing work at a surprisingly quick pace. This allowed him to produce a high volume of work as well, adding to his overall prestige. He had many colleagues in his era, including the famous artist John Constable. They were able to contribute much to the overall level of prestige of English artists in their time.
After building up a reputation as a portrait artist, Thomas Gainsborough became well known for his landscape works as well. Gainsborough gradually developed a reputation for preferring to paint these kinds of works, rather than traditional portrait pieces. One of his most popular landscape works has included "Landscape In Suffolk," which portrays a traditional English natural scene. These kinds of landscape paintings became more prevalent in the later catalog of Gainsborough's work.
