Biography:
Uruguayan Luis A. Solari developed a Magical Realist style celebrating the folklore, carnival traditions, and myths of the Río de la Plata natives. After gaining an art foundation at the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Montevideo, he moved to Buenos Aires and trained in painting, immersing himself in the techniques of such Argentine masters as Martín y Spilimbergo. Later, he traveled to Paris and studied etching, metal engraving, and Renaissance painting. The founder of the Taller de Artes Plásticas in Fray Bentos, Uruguay, Solari won First Prize for Drawing in the 1955 National Salon and the Acquisition Prize of the Municipal Plastic Arts Salon in both 1956 and 1957. Uruguay's Ministry of Education and Culture awarded him the Plastic Arts Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992, one year before his death. Solari worked in a variety of media, including collage, metal engraving, and drawing.
