Biography:

Who is photographer Sebastiao Salgado?

Sebastiao Salgado is a photographer and social activist who has made several documentaries and photography projects that focus on human rights. His work on the piece Genesis lasted seven years and melded photographs of landscapes and wildlife with human cultures that live according to their ancestral traditions. Salgado’s work often explores humanity’s relationship with the environment and how to create an equitable society.

As such, Salgado’s work has been honored by both the artistic and humanitarian communities. He has been awarded the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant, was admitted as a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is in the Royal Photographic Society as an honorary fellow. He also is a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts since 2016. His work has toured the world and appeared in some of the most prestigious galleries across the globe.

What kind of art does Sebastiao Salgado make?

Sebastiao Salgado is a photographer and documentarian whose work almost exclusively focuses on the environment, human rights, and the intersectionality of those two subjects. His work has been turned into the documentary The Salt of the Earth (2014) and was one of the last films of the great director, Wim Wenders. It won the award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards that year. Because of the rigorous and intensive nature of many of Salgado’s projects, his work can take years to complete. This process, while time-consuming, means that Salgado’s work is completely engrossing and affecting for the viewer. There is no piece quite like a Salgado.

How did photographer Sebastiao Salgago get started?

Salgado was born in a small town in Brazil on February 8th, 1944. His family moved around for much of his childhood, never setting down roots anywhere. In college, Salgado studied to be an economist, eventually earning his Master’s degree in economics from the University of Sao Paulo. He first worked as an economist for the International Coffee Organization, which led to frequent trips on behalf of the World Bank. It was on these trips that Salgado began documenting and photographing the people he met. He quit his economist job in 1973 to focus on photography full time. He got work with the photo agency, Sygma before eventually joining Magnum Photos -- where he would work for fifteen years. In 1994 he and his wife - Lelia Wanick Salgado - left to form their own agency, Amazonas Images.

How much are Sabastiao Salgado prints worth?

Many Sebastiao Salgado prints can sell for a few hundred dollars, ranging up into the tens of thousands. His prints are valued for their artistic merit as well as their social commentary, and as such his audience is large. It’s a towering gelatin silver print that shows the complete majesty of the Alaskan wilderness, and a great example of Salgado’s best work.
