Saul Steinberg (Romanian, 1914-1999)
Art
Birth Place: Bucharest (Bucure?ti municipality, Romania)
Biography:
Saul Steinberg is a name that many people recognize, though they might not know from where. Anyone who's read a few issues of The New Yorker though will certainly recognize his work. During his time working for the publication he created 87 covers, 33 cartoons, and 71 separate portfolios that contained a total of over 400 separate drawings. Over the course of his career just with this one magazine (he worked with others as well over the years), he created over 1,200 separate drawings.
Steinberg was born in Romania in 1914 and educated first at the University of Bucharest and then in Milan before the fascist government put anti-Semitic laws in place. He worked with a number of publications both in Italy as well as abroad, and when he was attempting to secure a U.S. visa, the New Yorker sponsored him, beginning a lifetime relationship between the artist and the magazine. Though he joined the war effort on behalf of the United States, as soon as victory in the second World War was achieved, Steinberg was right back to work creating images and illustrations that made people think and laugh, often at the same time.
Steinberg married abstract expressionist painter Hedda Sterne in 1944 and went on to be featured not just in magazines but also in museums until his death in 1999. Even after his death though, Steinberg's work has been featured in museum and gallery showings due to the quality and the period it represents.
